In Paris on November 21st the first manned ascent took place in a Montgolfier, as hot air balloons were now known. Benjamin Franklin, the American ambassador in Paris, recorded that, "Somebody asked me—what's the use of a balloon? I replied—what's the use of a newborn baby?"
