Marat's funeral came close to beatification. Jacobins throughout the land mounted dirges and eulogies; long parades with effigies and busts, special poems, contests to describe his heroism were launched. Schoolchildren were taught to cross themselves at his name; songs were composed and countless pamphlets produced.
